Project
The SMURF project aligns with the EU’s Forest Strategy and will work over the next four years to enable 20 million forest owners across Europe to generate economic activity in forests, while managing forests to conserve and adapt to climate change.
Mission
- The primary goal of the SMURF project is to promote sustainable forest management and conserve Europe's forests.
- The focus is on developing solutions for small forest properties, acknowledging the diversity of ownership (over 16 million owners in Europe).
Key Solutions proposed
by SMURF:
- Develop new organizational and business models tailored for small forest properties.
- Base these models on Closer to Nature Sylviculture practices (CNS) to enhance sustainability.
- Promote new ecosystem services, including carbon farming and biodiversity conservation.
- Emphasize the valorization of both wood and non-wood forest products.
The project aims to provide sustainability solutions that benefit the entire forestbased value chain. This includes addressing ecological concerns, promoting economic viability through wood/non-wood products, and considering the social and cultural aspects of forest management.
